Seminar Leader for TNTP Academy (Nashville)

Nashville Teaching Fellows: Help Us Change Outcomes for Students in Nashville
Seeking Part Time Seminar Leaders for TNTP Academy

Exceptional educators working in high need schools are demonstrating that great teaching is enough to outweigh the negative effects of poverty on student learning and close achievement gaps. Yet despite this growing body of research, poor and minority students continue to be the least likely to be taught by skillful teachers.

As an effective teacher in a high-needs school, you have seen the effects of this disparity in your own classroom, and have worked tirelessly to increase your students' achievement. You have seen the rapid acceleration of your students when they're challenged with rigorous content, and you've been inspired by the growth possible for all students in nine short months. We suspect, however, that you've felt frustrated knowing how easily the progress you've made with your students can be lost. How can you ensure that your students will have effective educators that will continue to support their academic success?

You've Helped Students to Succeed, Now Help Teachers Do the Same
The New Teacher Project, which designs and delivers certification programs for new teachers in partner states and school districts, shares your commitment to students in Nashville. Locally, the TNTP Academy - Nashville prepares Nashville Teaching Fellows for effective teaching in classrooms in MNPS. The program is currently seeking experienced educators for the part time position of Seminar Leader to formally train and support new teachers entering the classroom in the 2012-2013 school year as part of the TNTP Academy.

TNTP Academy
The goal of TNTP Academy is to ensure that every participant is able to achieve immediate, measurable success with their students in their first year of teaching and beyond. The Academy experience is anchored in the classroom, focusing on maintaining foundational "Fast Start" skills that participants have developed as part of their pre-service training, and developing a core set of more advanced teaching skills. The Academy experience is structured to advance participants' ability to be able to execute higher level skills, and classroom-based coaching will ensure the transfer of skills from the seminar to the participant's classroom. Participants will also acquire necessary content knowledge and meet state licensure requirements through online learning modules and independent study that will support their classroom performance.

Just as teachers set high standards for their students, TNTP Academy sets a high bar for earning licensure: a proven track record of success in the classroom. Once participants complete Academy requirements and their first year of teaching, TNTP Academy staff determine whether to recommend each candidate for state licensure. TNTP's holistic evaluation reflects multiple measures of performance -- including principal observations and program completion -- but places the greatest weight on student academic growth. Only teachers who are at least as effective as the average new teacher in their district will earn licensure, and remain in the classroom. By becoming a Seminar Leader, you can help ensure that first-year teachers meet this high standard for licensure.

Role and Responsibilities
Seminar Leaders are experienced and successful teachers who guide participants in bi-weekly seminar sessions as they continue to develop Fast Start skills and acquire more advanced teaching skills in order to see dramatic growth in their students' achievement. Seminars meet two evenings per month for three-hour sessions. There are 16 sessions total from August 2012-May 2013.

The role of Seminar Leader is an extraordinary opportunity to have a significant impact on the development of new teachers. Seminar Leader job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 Utilizing data on participant classroom performance to design and facilitate seminar learning experiences for 10-15 new teachers that meet individual and group needs.
 Using modeling and exemplars to shape participants' understanding of excellent teaching and how to implement it in their own Maintaining high levels of rigor in training sessions through skillful facilitation.
 Evaluating participants' performance in the seminar and providing regular verbal and written feedback to participants
 Establishing a culture of achievement that drives participants to ensure that all students achieve at high levels.
 Promoting analytical self-reflection in new teachers in order to accelerate growth and student achievement.
 Influencing, coaching, and motivating new teachers to reach ambitious goals with students.
 Facilitating opportunities for participants to practice Fast Start and more advanced teaching skills and discuss the application of these skills.
 Meeting with other Academy staff regularly for training, cooperative planning of meaningful training activities and norming on participant performance standards
